Favorite Natural Moisturizers + Non-Toxic Skincare
If you’re looking for natural & organic skincare that really works, look no further. I’m sharing some of my favorite options that I’ve tested for over the past couple of years.
These natural moisturizers cover a variety of needs and are budget friendly. Plus, a super simple DIY serum option too.
Note: some of these options are certified organic and some are not. However, all mentioned are considered clean and non-toxic. Definitely options that I trust and have loved using. I tested many other natural options, but the products mentioned in this post are my most favorite!
Natural, Organic, and Non-Toxic Skincare Explained
Natural Skincare: Natural skincare products are made from ingredients that are derived from nature, such as plants, minerals, and animal by-products (like honey and tallow). These products are often minimally processed, ensuring that the natural properties of the ingredients are preserved.
Organic Skincare: Organic skincare products use ingredients that are grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, GMOs, and other harmful chemicals. They are certified by various organizations, like USDA Organic, and typically follow stringent guidelines. Organic products are considered more eco-friendly and safer for the skin because they avoid harsh chemicals.
Non-Toxic Skincare: Non-toxic skincare products are formulated without harmful chemicals, synthetic fragrances, parabens, sulfates, and other ingredients that are known to cause skin irritation, disrupt hormones, or have other negative health impacts. The focus is on ensuring that the product is safe for human use and does not contain any potentially harmful substances.
Harmful Ingredients to Avoid
When choosing natural and non-toxic skincare products, it’s essential to avoid certain ingredients known to be harmful:
- Parabens: Used as preservatives, parabens can disrupt hormone function and have been linked to breast c*ncer.
- Phthalates: Commonly found in synthetic fragrances, phthalates can interfere with the endocrine system and cause reproductive and developmental issues.
- Sulfates (SLS and SLES): These are harsh detergents that can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.
- Synthetic Fragrances: Often labeled as “fragrance” or “parfum,” these can contain a cocktail of chemicals, some of which may cause allergies, skin irritations, and hormone disruption.
- Petrochemicals (e.g., mineral oil, petroleum jelly): These are derived from petroleum and can clog pores, leading to acne and other skin issues.
- Formaldehyde: A preservative that can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, and has been linked to c*ncer.
- Artificial Colors: These can cause skin sensitivity and irritation, and some have been linked to c*ncer.
- Triclosan: An antibacterial agent that can contribute to antibiotic resistance and disrupt thyroid function.
- Chemical Sunscreens (Oxybenzone, Octinoxate): These can penetrate the skin and disrupt hormones, potentially leading to long-term health issues.
Things to Look For When Purchasing Natural & Non-Toxic Skincare
- Certifications: Look for products that are certified organic by reputable organizations, such as USDA Organic, EcoCert, or COSMOS. These certifications ensure that the product meets certain standards for organic ingredients.
- Ingredient Transparency: Choose products with a clear and complete ingredient list. Avoid products that use vague terms like “fragrance” or “parfum” without specifying the source.
- Short Ingredient List: Generally, the shorter the ingredient list, the less likely it contains harmful chemicals. Natural skincare products often have fewer, more recognizable ingredients.
- Natural Preservatives: Opt for products that use natural preservatives like Vitamin E (tocopherol), rosemary extract, or grapefruit seed extract instead of synthetic ones.
- Cold-Pressed Oils: When looking at oils in skincare products, choose those that are cold-pressed, as they retain more nutrients and are less likely to contain chemical residues.
- Glass Packaging: Products stored in glass containers are preferable to plastic, as glass is non-reactive and doesn’t leach chemicals into the product.
- Eco-Friendly and Cruelty-Free: Look for certifications like Leaping Bunny or PETA, which indicate that the product is not tested on animals and is environmentally conscious.
I also like to use the EWG website for researching good products. Their Skin Deep database has a lot of information and ratings on a variety of skincare.
By being mindful of these factors, you can make more informed decisions that benefit your skin and overall health.
