Butter boards are the perfectly delicious and a super simple appetizer trend that’s becoming more and more popular.

And rightly so!

Who doesn’t love a delicious butter spread paired with savory or sweet flavor combinations? I mean, it’s butter…what’s not to love?! Am I right?

I love this butter board because it gives the best of creamy, salty, and sweet flavors. And it literally takes only 10 minutes to put together!

Ingredients

I love how simple the ingredients are for such a special appetizer.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • unsalted butter — I recommend using a high quality butter. European or Irish butter is my top recommendation. It really does make all the difference in this recipe!
  • fig preserves
  • flaky sea salt
  • goat cheese — I prefer to use a log of goat cheese and crumble it myself, rather than the pre-packaged crumbled goat cheese. The log has a softer texture and allows you to add some large chunks of cheese than the crumbles would. 
  • small figs
  • honey

Note: if using salted butter, reduce the amount of flaky sea salt in the recipe by half. 

The butter should be soft, but not melted. Allow the butter to sit at room temperature for an hour for two to soften. Do not microwave to soften the butter.

Instructions

Spread the softened butter in an even layer on a board or small platter. Add some divots and texture on the surface with a butter knife or back of a spoon to create pockets for the toppings.

Add small dollops of the fig preserves over the surface of the butter.

Sprinkle the butter and fig preserves with the flaky sea salt.

Crumble the goat cheese and scatter over top of the board.

Arrange five slices of fig in the shape of a flower in one corner of the board. Repeat with five more slices in the opposite corner.

Drizzle honey over everything.

Enjoy immediately with crusty bread, crostinis, or crackers.

How to store leftovers

The butter board can be made a little in advance and stored in the refrigerator tightly wrapped in plastic. Allow the board to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to an hour before serving.

Store leftover butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
