Skillet Sourdough Apple Fritters
These sourdough apple fritters are super simple to make at home and made healthier than most other alternatives.
Traditional apple fritters are technically donuts and deep fried in oil. Our version gives you that delicious fritter flavor, but made much healthier.
We keep this recipe super simple and with healthy ingredients. It’s also made on the stovetop — sort of like pancakes and without the need of deep frying or baking them.

Substitutions + Recipe Notes
- I like to get the maximum amount of nutrients in this recipe by feeding the sourdough starter the night before by allowing it to ferment overnight. However, if needed you can use sourdough discard — but only if you must. Learn more about sourdough starter.
- Any apple will do – use your favorites or whichever apples you have available.
Instructions
In a large bowl, add all ingredients and combine well.
Heat up a cast iron skillet or non-stick pan and add some coconut oil to coat the bottom of the pan. Measure out the batter to the skillet – kind of like making pancakes.
Heat until the edges are golden brown and flip over repeating the process. Remove from the pan when both sides are golden and the fritters are cooked through.
Allow the fritters to cool a bit on a wire rack and dust with a bit of powdered sugar.

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days. Simply heat them up in the skillet with coconut oil or butter until warmed through and the edges are crispy.

Sourdough Apple Fritters
Ingredients
- 2 cups active sourdough starter (fed the night before)
- 2 large apples (chopped, approximately 2 cups)
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- coconut oil for the skillet
- powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Heat up the cast iron or other large non-stick skillet over medium-low heat. Add a little coconut oil to the pan to coat the bottom.
- In a large mixing bowl, stir together all ingredients until well combined.
- Measure out ¼ cup of the fritter batter and add to the pre-heated skillet. Heat until the edges become golden brown and then flip and repeat on the other side.
- Remove from the pan when both sides are golden and the center is cooked through. Allow to cool slightly and then dust with powdered sugar if desired.
