The last several days have been busy with planning and organizing our homestead goals and plans for the new year. I also put together a summary by month of what we plan to accomplish based off of our experiences from the previous year.
I’ll post those in my next blog.
(Update, you can find them here.)
Here’s our list of homestead goals for 2016:
Larger veggie, fruit and berry garden. Would like to expand our garden with another bed or two and add some fruit trees.
Plant early and try to be better with succession planting.
Grow more herbs to dry.
Buy a new deep freezer.
Compost. This year I’d like to add composting to our to-do list.
Acquire more goats. We’d like to expand our herd with up to 100 goats for the summer.
Build a chicken tractor. We tried free range with our chicks and there are just too many predators around here. We lost half of our flock last year due to various predators…who knew owls were out during the day?? I sure didn’t! It is just too sad and devastating when we lose our animals. They truly do become members of our family!
Reorganize our goat and chicken sheds. I’d like to remodel the storage areas this spring.
Seek additional sources of income from our homestead in order to become more self sufficient.
Participate in local farmer’s markets.
Replace our family vehicle with something bigger… Baby #3 is expected to arrive this spring.
Quit the grocery store! We grow our own, raise our own meat and now have goats for dairy. We can also continue to utilize local sources and co-ops for anything else we’d need.
Hey! I love your goals–I hope you get to fulfill then before the year’s over! My main goals are to get our pastures done for our dairy cow (fenced in), raise meat chickens this fall, hatch more egg layers (soon!), can more food from the garden, and secure a better place for our meat rabbits. 🙂 It’s going to be a great year! 🙂
Great goals as well! 🙂
One exciting thing about homesteading is that goals are always changing. We are always kept on our toes. Ha. 🙂 Good luck to you!
